FISH ATTRACTOR PROGRAM

In August 1978 at Crooked Creek Bay on Lake Barkley a total of 400 fishery biologists and aides conducted the largest fish population study ever undertaken. One immediately valuable discovery was the effectiveness of "fish attractors". These brush piles attract and concentrate fish by providing cover. The study showed that an acre of brush attracted 8 times more fish weighing 13 times more than an acre without brush. Based on the data, TVA's Land Between the Lakes and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources have begun projects to place more attractors in Barkley and Kentucky Lakes. Attractor sites are marked for the convenience of fishermen. Shallow water attractors are identified by a white tree trunk at the end of the line of brush piles. Deep water attractors are identified by white buoys with the fishing symbol. Our map marks these fish attractors.
